Mesothelioma is a rare but very aggressive cancer that affects the peritoneum, pleura (lungs), or, less commonly, the pericardium. It is almost always a consequence of asbestos exposure. Asbestos was widely used in the 20th century, such as in construction, shipbuilding, and in the automotive and industrial sectors. Tiny fibers could be inhaled and become lodged in the lungs, or in the case of peritoneal mesothelioma, deposited in the abdominal lining. A typical characteristic is that symptoms of these malignant tumors often only appear decades later. This makes it difficult for those affected and their loved ones to pinpoint the original exposure in terms of time and location.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the disease is usually fatal, and treatment is expensive. Because asbestos risks are preventable and have been known to manufacturers for decades, U.S. courts have held many companies liable for failing to protect employees, consumers, and their families. This has resulted in compensation payouts, sometimes in the millions, for those affected and their survivors.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n
